Yalla!

Maria also performs with Yalla! a Middle Eastern inspired Music and Dance group formed with Phil Carroll and Andrew Kuhlmann in 1997. Yalla! are an exciting six piece band from Melbourne. They bring the traditional music and dance of the Middle East to life with their own East meets West flavour.

Yalla is a spicy mix of quarter tone accordion, oud, ney, percussion, violin and mesmerising dance. Maria dances, plays percussion and sings. Phil Carroll plays quartertone accordion. mizmaar(arabic oboe), ney(arabic flute) and vocals. Andrew Kuhlmann plays percussion (tabul, darrabukas, reqs, dufs) Phil Gunter plays oud(lute) and percussion and Ernie Gruner plays violin.

Yalla! features the Egyptian styles of Shaabi(folk), Baladi(urban folk) and Sharqi(classical) as well as music of Persia, Turkey, North Africa, Tribal and Trance. Performances have included: Port Fairy Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival, The Melbourne International Festival, Fairbridge Festival WA, The Spiegeltent, Victorian regional touring, and many festivals and dance clubs.

Yalla is available for private functions, festivals, regular in-house gigs. Yalla! can play indoor or outdoor concerts and also have a great roving show. Order a Yalla CD
