Isis Dance ! Maria's
Teaching Maria
began her teaching career In 1991. There is no accredited formal training in the
field of Middle Eastern Dance, so Maria took it upon herself to teach to the best
of her ability. Her enquiring mind and a sense of being guided from a place deep
within has taken her on a journey that has now made Maria a highly respected and
sought after teacher. Maria gives regular classes in Melbourne and travels regionally
and nationally with her work. Maria is a generous teacher as well as an excellent
dancer. Participants in her workshops reported to have found her teaching style
warm and approachable. Maria's work is based on the essence
of traditional Egyptian Dance, 'Raqs Sharqi'. She has devised a way of teaching
which incorporates anatomy, meditation, breath work, visualisation, creative imagery,
the Chakras, yoga, and her knowledge of Alexander Technique, Mind Body Centering,
and other body alignment processes. ' She imparts a very direct and simple
understanding of how she uses her body for different dance movements and achieves
miracles in small spaces of time. Thoroughly recommendable' - Mary Souness,
proprietor and tour manager of Just Shows to Go.
Maria is passionate about
her work, and through her years of experience and research she has devised 'The
Authentic relationship to the Origins of Movement in Middle Eastern Dance."
The work is challenging, stimulating and unique, offering the student a vehicle
to truly understand their dance. Maria introduces other elements into the teaching
which may be Western contemporary dance or North African dance, such as Moroccan.
There is also interpretation of music, choreography, improvisation,
stick work, veil work, playing Sagat/Zills/Finger cymbals. A very important element
is humour! This is a solid foundation for any formal style of Middle Eastern Dance
that a student may pursue. Welcome
