Summer School Workshops 2008 with Maria Sangiorgi
Wed 23th to Sun 27th Jan

Amazing journey I expected a lot of challenges and I got them . . . I am realistic about the process and prepared to begin again at learning dance. I believe that learning this integrated movement will affect the rest of my life, so I a doubly committed. My level of awareness is much greater. I feel like I have absorbed a lot over the 5 days and have a lot to play with when I go home. I plan to do regular classes with maria and to continue the journey.

Testimonial from Participant 2006 Summer School

The 5 day Program as a whole is carefully designed for Teachers, Professionals and Experienced Dancers, however Days 1 to 3 cater to all levels of dance.

As part of the program, those participating in all 5 days of classes will be asked to observe the teaching methods employed from days 1 to 3 and how they experienced them. They will be given a certificate of recognition at the end of the program, as well as an evaluation of their progress and a follow up private session in a month or so to see how they are going.

Program

Actual dates, and venues to be fully finalised soon

1. The Bones of Middle Eastern Dance

I thoroughly enjoyed your workshop about dancing with the bones of the body .. The day was very worthwhile, and I enjoyed dancing with you   Summer Workshop 2005

This workshop will explore the anatomy of movement in the dance, getting into the nitty gritty of what it is you are moving. It will also explore release technique, and begin to create an understanding of how the internal body can inform the external body in movement. Participants will learn a short choreography with a break down of the movements involved.

This workshop is for all Levels. Those attending all 5 days will be given observation and reporting tasks to do at the end of each day.

Investment $75

2. The Essence of Raqs Sharqi Egyptian Dance

Traditional Egyptian Dance holds the fundamental movements to much of what contemporary belly dance is based on, and grasping an understanding of these movements gives grounding to your preferred style of dance. The traditional styles Egyptian Shaabi (folk) and Baladi (urban folk) also hold a natural and easy relationship to movement that greatly aids, freedom of movement, grace, elegance and natural alignment in the dance.

These 2 days focus on these important elements of Traditional Egyptian dance.
They will include:

  • Healing Body Awareness
  • Anatomy of movement in Natural Dance Alignment Dance technique,
  • music appreciation and understanding,
  • Improvised choreographies - allowing the music to lead your dance through repetition
  • Live percussion - Identifying and relating the rhythms to music and movement

Participants of all 5 days will be asked to observe both their own experiences and the teaching methods employed whilst participating in the workshop, and consolidate at the end of this section.

Investment $150

3. The Essence of Authentic Movement in Middle Eastern Dance

Your ability to make bones and muscles, mind and emotion all connect as one, totally blew me away : Summer Workshops 2004

In these last 2 days of the program teachers, professionals and experienced dancers, will be given an opportunity to analyse their personal dance in relation to the understanding and insights they have gained over the last few days,

Participants may explore their own dance style and methods of teaching in a safe and non-judgemental environment. We will explore the fundamental movements of Middle Eastern dance (MED) and see if we can shift our thinking out of a ‘pushing linear Western mode’ and into ‘letting go of the end gain mode’, which is the essential characteristic of MED, in order to develop an wholistic understanding of how this can improve our teaching and performance.

This is also beneficial for teachers who wish to develop a better understanding of their students’ idiosyncrasies. We will study the Anatomy of each movement the dancer presents and use concepts from Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, Body Mind Centring, Imagery and Visualisation.

This work is challenging. It requires commitment and a willingness to shift from the external outcome, to the internal source of each movement. Also very beneficial to dancers who experience pain whilst dancing.

It is recommended that dancers who choose to attend The Essence of Authentic Movement in Middle Eastern Dance, attend all 5 days. You will benefit greatly from this experience. If you are not attending to whole 5 day program and you wish to attend this section of the workshop you must have attended at least one other day.
