School of Raqs Sharqi
Raqs
Sharqi is the traditional female dance of Egypt, known world
wide for its distinctive beauty and power. From the earliest times,
dance performance was an important aspect of celebratory occasions
and the dance was learnt in the traditional manner, passed down
from mother to daughter. However, since the 19th century, the dance
form has been more widely honoured and is now widespread over Europe,
through USA and across Australia. The School of Raqs Sharqi, Melbourne,
Australia, continues this deeply female art form and celebrates
the compelling earthiness and soaring beauty of Raqs Sharqi.
The
School of Raqs Sharqi incorporates the fundamental principles of
the disciplines of breath work, Alexander Technique, Body Mind Centering,
Yoga and Anatomy.
